"Some boys will keep it, some will break it, and some boys, they just won't want it. You gotta be careful who you give your heart to..." Slate Declan
First loves, we all got them. Mine is Slate Declan. He was kind, gentle, and caring. Still, he managed to break my heart. So I put miles between us, and eventually, my heart healed.
I haven’t seen Slate in years, but a couple friends and I are going back to the Bayou for the summer. While I’m visiting my hometown, I’m going to look up Slate Declan. And I plan to break his heart, just as he did mine. I'll remind him of what he has lost, and then I'll prove to him that I’ve moved on.
It should be real easy, right?
Well, let me tell you, Slate Declan is not the same guy that I left behind. And there’s another problem. How do you break someone’s heart when they no longer have one?
After reading Jax, which I absolutely loved, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Slate. Kelly Gendron didn't disappoint. I loved this book just as much.
Slate has had a rough 6 years, he's been through so much. He isn't the same man that broke Rayna's heart. He's almost a shell of the person he once was. It was hard not to have compassion for this wonderful man, although he acted like a complete jerk at times. The fact that he would hallucinate and think Rayna was there for years just proved to me how much her really loved her.
Rayna is such a great character. She knows what she wants and goes after it. What she wants more than anything is to break Slate's heart like he broke hers. But she sees the old Slate underneath all the pain and anger. To me, her plan needed more than 3 days, but what do I know about the type of drugs he was addicted to. I couldn't put down the book until I knew if she would give in to her own feelings and follow through with a relationship or would she go with her original plan and break his heart.
My only complaint is that the book wasn't long enough. I was so wrapped up in the story that I didn't realize I was at the end until it was over. I could have read so much more about these two. This book isn't quite as a light-read as Jax was. This one focused more of Rayna and Slate alone. The interactions between Emmie, Rayna, and Lurlene that was so much fun in Jax was missing for the most part in this book. It's still a fantastic read, just a little more serious.
This book is written in alternating POV. Some chapters are written in the present, others in the past. There is no cliffhanger ending for Rayna and Slate, but there is cliffhanger for Zeke's story. I can't wait to get my hands on that one too. Drug addiction is the focus of most of the book. And of course, since the Declan brothers are MMA fighters, there's going to be some violence.
Kelly’s motto ~ "Bad boys, give 'em a little time and experience, and they will evolve into misbehaving men!" And what hot-blooded woman doesn’t want a naughty, all grown up bad boy?
