Before I ever fell in love with Bryce, there was Hayden. Hayden was my first love, the kind of love that takes your breath away and you remember forever. My love story with Bryce came later. Much later, after everything had happened.

Avery Hill and Hayden Stuart are high school sweethearts and each other's first true love. When Hayden is accepted to college in Los Angeles, Avery intends to follow him so they can build a life together. After a tragic chain of events ruins their plans forever, Avery is left to pick up the pieces. Will she survive all that was lost? And will she forgive the man who destroyed her and Hayden's dreams forever?

For being such a short book, it packs a lot of punch. Typically, Novellas are too short to get very emotionally vested, but this one is an exception. Make sure you have a box of Kleenex nearby when you read this whopper. The connection I felt with the characters was surprising.

This is a wonderful story of first love. The author describes that euphoric feeling so well that I felt like I was reliving those feelings myself again. From the beginning, you know that the relationship doesn't last, so there was that feeling of doom, however, knowing that Avery was going to find happiness again helped ease the overwhelming feeling of loss that was so well described.

I would highly recommend anyone read this book, but do it in private, in the privacy of your own home. It's impossible to hold back the tears.

Bryce Humphrey has never forgiven himself for his actions five years ago. Nor can he forget the two lives he ruined, or the girl he secretly loved. When he runs into Avery, the person who has haunted his dreams since that fateful night, his life is sent into a tailspin. As he gets to know her again after all these years, he realizes she has never gotten over the past. Will their shared pain bring them closer? And will they forge a new beginning built on healing, forgiveness, and love?

I read this book immediately after finishing Just Us, which I highly recommend doing. Actually, I finished them both in one day, it was that good. This book happens 5 years after Just Us. 5 years where Avery has tried to move on from the incredible loss of her first love. On the outside, it looks like she's doing well... but on the inside....that's a whole other story.

In Just Us, we are introduced to Bryce, as Hayden's best friend and the cause of Avery's pain. My heart just went out to him. He has punished himself for one mistake he made 5 years ago,  he can't let go of the guilt.

This book is so much more than a romance story. It's about forgiveness, healing, and living life, not just going through the motions. Bryce supports Avery while helping her to grieve. He doesn't want to be the cause of any more hurt in Avery's life. Avery is there to support Bryce while he deals with the overwhelming guilt.

I don't think I can say enough about this wonderful series. It's definitely a series I would recommend to anyone.
