He’s utterly alone…
Tortured and existing in a dark spiral of despair, bestselling British author, Gavin Cooke, has come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to escape the seedy lifestyle he had been living in London and in a desperate attempt to regain his writing focus. He’s twisted, bitter and angry at the world. He’s a loner… needing not a single thing other than his Scotch and a laptop upon which he can bang out his next erotic, dark thriller.
She’s running in place and getting nowhere…
Savannah Shepherd’s life is falling apart. Her dream of being a wildlife photographer seems a distant memory and she’s barely able to make ends meet. Driving herself forward with no clear goals apparent, she’s about ready to pack up her bags and head home with her tail between her legs.
Two unlikely lovers…
He’s raw, forceful and a dirty talker. She’s a flowers and romance type of girl. Yet within each other, they find a mutual craving that can only be satisfied by giving in to their desires for one another.
Lust turns into something more… something they were not looking for but tentatively accept. Will it be enough to push them past the obstacles of Gavin’s bitter past?
*SUGAR ON THE EDGE can be read as a stand-alone*
Gavin Cooke is not a nice man. He ticked me off more than once. He's your typical cocky bastard who thinks that everyone should bow down to his every demand. I kept reading just to make sure he got put in his place in the end. But then he started to grow on me. As I read, I learned that there is a lot more to him than meets the eye. He's been through hell and back, and is in a really dark part of his life. Eventually, I just felt a connection to him that I didn't expect. Until he.... then I just wanted to smack some sense into him. To me, he lost his place in HEA.
Savannah is a sweet, girl-next-door kind of girl that deserves to be treated better than the prick she agrees to work for. I really felt for her. She wants to make it on her own, prove to everyone she can do it. She's willing to put up with Gavin just to make ends meet. She's one of those that no matter how hard she is knocked down, she always picks herself up. Lucky for her she is, because Gavin knocks her down a couple times (not physically, don't want you to think there is any abuse here). She's a lot more forgiving than I would ever have been too.
The odd combination that is Gavin and Savannah just seems to work. Most of the book, I was hoping that Savannah could bring Gavin out of his darkness. And that Gavin would help Savannah realize her dreams. But there were other times....
I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. Although this is a part of a series, I have only read 1 of the 2 books available now. I didn't feel like I was missing anything. This book can absolutely be read as a stand alone.
